Believe it or not, nutrition is an important part of being a productive employee.

It’s nutrition week! You may have heard the saying – you are what you eat. But, how can somebody eat healthy when they don’t know what healthy eating really means. This nutrition week, take the opportunity to promote healthy eating at the workplace and reap the benefits of greater productivity.

When your workforce spends all day on tasks at work, their brains nutritional demands are greater. According to Patti Milligan, director of nutrition at Tignum, “You produce lots of oxidants in the brain when you’re working.” A diet that contains the proper proportions of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water is necessary to maintain good health and rejuvenate the body.

Make better choices

It might not come as a surprise but, cutting out fatty foods and chips at lunch can actually help you focus better. Andrew DiMichele, chief technical officer of Omada Health, an online diabetes-prevention program, did this and the result was a happier mood and better focus, even in the afternoon. Supposedly, processed sugary foods, high doses of caffeine, and soda can actually dehydrate you.

So, it’s not just the food, it’s also about hydration. According to a 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition, dehydration in men reduced focus and memory and increased tension, anxiety, and fatigue. Hydrating regularly is said to flush out all the metabolic waste that your brain and body produces while it is hard at work and help you focus better.

Nutrition week at the workplace

The point of all this is to raise awareness on the topic of nutrition at the workplace in a fun, engaging manner. This will not only boost performance at work but, in all walks of life. But, how do you go about it? The answer is – a holistic wellness program that covers all aspects of nutrition. Here are a few engaging activities that you can conduct at work to get started in that direction:

  • Invite a chef and conduct a session on healthy cooking
  • Add a salad bar – if you don’t already have one – for a few days with a calorie counter
  • Educate your employees on the benefits of healthy eating through fun mediums (quizzes, games etc.)
  • Setup a healthy snack station at work
  • Conduct a session on the basics of nutrition with the help of a certified nutritionist
  • Give your employees the opportunity to have a telephone consultation with a certified nutritionist

In reality, it all boils down to this: how long can your employees sustain a healthy eating lifestyle? There is a saying “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” 21 days, that’s how long it takes to form a new habit. So, why wait? Reach out to us and we can help you launch a program that will go well beyond the three week time frame and actually work!
